Opening Doors Through Inclusion: How Community Activities Benefit People with Down Syndrome

One of the most meaningful ways people with Down syndrome can build confidence, develop new skills, and create lasting relationships is through participation in inclusive community activities. Whether it's joining a sports team, taking music lessons, attending summer camp, participating in dance classes, or becoming a member of a local gym, these experiences provide opportunities that extend far beyond the activity itself.

Inclusive community programs allow people with Down syndrome to learn alongside their peers, develop independence, and become active participants in the communities where they live, learn, work, and play. These experiences help build social connections, foster self-confidence, and create a sense of belonging. They also provide opportunities for community members, instructors, coaches, and peers to learn from and interact with people with Down syndrome, helping to break down stereotypes and create more welcoming and inclusive environments for everyone.

DSACO believes that every person with Down syndrome deserves access to these opportunities. That's why we offer the Community Access Fund, a reimbursement program designed to help people with Down syndrome participate in activities throughout the community.

What is the Community Access Fund?

DSACO's Community Access Fund provides financial reimbursement of up to $250 per year for eligible community-based activities and memberships. Funds can be used to help offset the cost of activities such as:

  • Sports and recreation programs

  • Swim lessons

  • Gym memberships

  • Personal training

  • Summer camps

  • Gymnastics

  • Martial arts

  • Physical and speech therapies

  • Art classes

  • Music, dance, or voice lessons

The Community Access Fund is intended to support participation in community programs and activities and is not available for DSACO programs.

Real Impact for Families

Families consistently share how the Community Access Fund has helped their loved ones try new activities, develop new interests, and become more involved in their communities.

One family shared how their son's love of music blossomed beyond guitar lessons:

"We started off with just guitar lessons, then the interest grew to drums, banjo, fiddle and harmonica. With each start of these new lessons Tanner gets to meet new instructors, gets him out into the community more and gives him something interesting to share with others. And just as importantly for him, he has really changed the mindset of these instructors as none of them have ever given lessons to a person with Down syndrome."

For another family, the funding opened the door to dance:

"We used the Community Access Funds to help pay for Haley's first dance class this year! She attended an intro to dance class in Marysville and participated in the recital. She loved every minute of it and asks for 'class' all the time."

Other families have used the funds to participate in sports, camps, and fitness opportunities, or to purchase memberships to experience places like Franklin Park Conservatory, Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, COSI, and their local YMCA:

"Our family is able to have the kids participate in more things without having to worry about the cost (wrestling, basketball camp, etc.). We've enjoyed memberships to different places that we wouldn't have without DSACO reimbursing."

"The funds have allowed Justice to participate in activities in our community and stay in shape!"

"It has taken the burden of cost away so that we can take advantage of opportunities that we might have otherwise passed on. The boys love swimming, and they benefitted and enjoyed the opportunity to do swim lessons in a safe and adaptive environment."

"My daughter loves being able to attend K-pop class and the Community Access Funds have helped us make that happen for her."

These stories demonstrate that the benefits of community participation go far beyond learning a new skill. They create opportunities for friendships, confidence, independence, physical health, and meaningful inclusion.
